Reasons why people aren't enrolling in cohort-based courses

Source from Medium Post by Piyush Petkar

While surfing the web, I came across this Medium post by Piyush Petkar. He wrote a case study of his UX/UI project from attending the 3rd cohort of 10k Designers.

Piyush's idea was to built a cohort marketplace since there's a non-stop surge on this kind of product idea nowadays.

The main thing that piqued my attention is his survey findings. He conducted a survey before building his design prototype to make sure his vision was in the right place.

Here are the exact results from his survey:

The highlight!

  • 46.2% says they are "not fully aware of what cohort is"
  • 30.8% says they are "not sure about the teaching methods"
  • 23.1% says the "schedule won't match up"

The data only got 40+ respondents from 18-28 age range, which isn't enough to cover a comprehensive market research. But the results were still intriguing.

Takeaways from this findings:

  • Cohort-based course is still unpopular for other people. But once they get into it, the experience was highly recommendable.
  • Schedule and timezones are a huge factor in signing up for the waitlist.
  • Educating your audience on how the course structure works can increase the chance of conversion.
  • Word of mouth works best for this niche (and social media ads). The after-cohort experience is a major major plus! A high opportunity for referral system.
  • Clearly state the student's transformation. What Point B looks like? What will happen after weeks of learning?
  • Those who knew about the term don't mean they enrolled in a cohort-based course. They're still lurking around.
  • Coding and Fine Arts are the topics this market wants to learn.
